The Full Story
Black+Abroad first launched at Virginia Commonwealth University as an annual event organized and hosted by study abroad alumni students of color as a way to share Black student experiences and engage with students interested in study abroad. Black+Abroad has evolved into a black-focused series in collaboration with Virginia higher education institutions with the mission of denouncing the notions that “Black folk don’t travel”.
Through candid conversations, personal stories of worldly adventures, and discussions around “Blackness” and “Black perceptions” abroad, we hope that students feel inspired, motivated, and gain insight from experienced travelers who had to take the leap to travel for the first time at some point. Black+Abroad is a series that aims at closing the gap between being black and going abroad.
Black+Abroad 2023 is organized by the Education Abroad staff at the following Virginia universities:
Amy Leap, Virginia Commonwealth University
Anne Marsh, Bridgewater College
Bethany Gilipeau-Konate, Shenandoah University
Julia Wells, Virginia Commonwealth University
Danielle Davis, Virginia Tech
Ebony Majeed, Christopher Newport University
Lauren Devan, Randolph-Macon College
Mandy Reinig, Virginia Wesleyan University
Ramona Kirsch, Hollins University
